When the Audi A1 first hit the UK market in 2010, it redefined what customers can expect from a small premium car.

In the years since, the Audi A1 has established itself as a prime favourite amongst motorists of all ages. Not only does the Audi A1 make the ideal first car, but it’s also a sensible choice for families who are seeking a practicable, reliable and comfortable supermini.

For even better value for money, opt for one of our second-hand Audi A1 cars.

Versions of the Audi A1

The first-generation Audi A1 comes with 3-doors, whilst the Audi A1 Sportback offers 5-doors for extra practicality. This makes it a popular choice with families – also thanks to the large 335 litre boot.

Regarding trim levels, the SESport, and S-Line trims all include alloy wheels, remote central locking, air con, and a six-speaker audio system linked to a 6.5-inch display. An auxiliary-in connection also features right across the range, making it quick and easy to play your favourite music.

Step up from the SE to Sport and you can expect larger wheels, sports suspension, Bluetooth connectivity and extra driver information, whilst the S-Line version includes 17-inch alloys, even sportier suspension, and a leather and cloth-combination interior.

The Audi A1 range features a handful of special editions, including the Black Edition and Contrast Edition. These add extra kit both inside and out and represent even better value for money on the used market. Other popular Audi A1 colours include white, Nano Grey, red and Scuba Blue.

Audi A1 engines

Upon launch, there were three engine choices available. The 1.2-litre TFSI petrol offers 86PS and returns 55.4mpg and 119g/km CO2. The larger 1.4-litre TFSI petrol offers 122 PS, whilst returning the same fuel economy and CO2 emissions as the 1.2 TFSI. A 1.6-litre TDI diesel was also offered, with 105 PS, economy of 72.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 102g/km.

More powerful engines were added later, with a new 185PS 1.4-litre TFSI and a 143PS 2.0-litre TDI, whilst a new 1.0-litre TFSI was added along with a revised model range in 2014. The smaller, three-cylinder engine replaced the original 1.2-litre TFSI, and came with 95PS, economy of more than 60mpg, and CO2 emissions of 99g/km.

Audi A1 FAQs

Should I buy an Audi A1 or A3?

Technically, a mid-range Audi A1 is the equivalent of an entry-level Audi A3, but the former still offers the high-specification features you can typically expect from Audi.

If you’re seeking additional space and the next level of premium quality, then the Audi A3 is probably a stronger contender. The Audi A3 comes with more engine choices (including a powerful 2.0-litre diesel tank) and better road-bump absorption. However, the Audi A1 is nimbler and more dynamic, packing a lot of power into a smaller exterior. This makes it an ideal choice for a first car or those seeking a more compact driving experience.

Can I put a child seat in the back of an A1?

Yes – there are ISOFIX points in the rear seats for securely fixing a car seat. There are also five-door versions of the Audi A1 available, which are better suited for securing car seats.

Is the Audi A1 front-wheel drive?

The Audi A1 is front-wheel drive, meaning it feels confident and sure-footed out on the road.

Front-wheel drive cars usually offer better fuel economy and traction in poor weather conditions, and the A1 is no different. You can expect great MPG from all models, as well as low emissions for a vehicle of its size.

What is the Audi A1 boot size?

The Audi A1 may be a small car, but this doesn’t mean that it’s lacking in cargo space. The Audi A1 Sportback, for example, can hold 335 litres in the boot (1,090 litres with the rear seats lowered).

What’s the Audi A1 comfort pack?

Some of our used Audi A1 cars come with a comfort package, which includes cruise control, light and rain sensors, rear parking sensors and an auto-dimming rear view mirror.

Is the Audi A1 available on Motability?

Our hassle-free Motability scheme is designed to offer eligible applicants a brand-new car on a monthly Mobility allowance. Motability isn’t offered on used Audi A1s, but we’d be more than happy to talk to you about the new Audi A1, which is available through the scheme.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know about the used car you’re interested in then just let us know.
