The Volkswagen (VW) Golf is now in its seventh generation and continues to be one of Volkswagen’s best-selling models for a variety of different reasons. Not only is the car relatively cheap to run, but it also boasts excellent sound insultation and is comfortable to drive on most road surfaces. Plus, the VW Golf is just as attractive on the inside as it is on the outside, too.

Residual values remain strong across the VW Golf range, meaning that your second-hand VW Golf is likely to stand the test of time.

Versions of the VW Golf

On the market since the 1970s, the VW Golf has gone through some big changes over the past few decades. The most recent version of the car – the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 – has been on sale in the UK since 2012. The current range includes four main trim levels, in addition to performance models and an alternative fuel version.

The Volkswagen Golf S is the entry-level version, yet quality certainly hasn’t been compromised when it comes to appearance and specification. The car comes with an infotainment system with 8.0" colour touch screen, air conditioning, and front and rear electric windows.

Step up to the Volkswagen Golf Match and you’ll benefit from an even higher level of comfort and convenience, thanks to alloy wheels, satellite navigation and parking sensors all-round.

The GT trim adds sporty style and additional comfort, with 17" alloys, front sports seats and Piano Black decorative inserts. This is an ideal option for those who want the sporty look-and-feel of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, without the higher expense and insurance costs.

The top-spec Volkswagen Golf R-Line is recognised for its dynamic styling, with trim-specific alloy wheels as well as selectable driving modes.

On top of the ‘standard’ VW Golf, there’s also the Volkswagen e-Golf and the Volkswagen Golf GTI, which offer electric motoring and performance motoring respectively. Both of these additional models come with everything you’d expect from a VW Golf, plus some model-specific features.

VW Golf FAQs

Is a Golf a good first car?

Yes – VW Golf cars are recognised for being solidly built, reliable, safe, stylish and cost-effective to run.

VW Golfs also maintain high residual value, meaning that you’ll likely achieve a reasonable reselling price, even on a used car. If you eventually decide to sell your first car, then this is a great aspect to consider.

Insurance premiums are slightly higher for younger drivers starting out with a VW Golf, but the quality of the car, low running costs and easy maintenance make it a safe choice.

Which VW Golf should I buy?

All Golfs are recognised for their versatile driving capabilities and affordability to run, but some are more suited to certain requirements than others. The entry-level Golf S is ideal for those seeking a cheap VW Golf with high quality features, whilst the Golf R-Line is the car of choice for those who want more advanced driving modes and a higher specification.

Are VW Golfs front-wheel drive?

The majority of Volkswagen Golfs are front-wheel drive, meaning it feels confident and sure-footed out on the road.

Front-wheel drive cars usually offer better fuel economy and traction in poor weather conditions, and the Golf is no different. You can expect great MPG from all models, as well as low emissions for a vehicle of its size.

Can I fit a roof box to my Golf to add some extra luggage capacity?

Yes – the majority can have a roof box fitted, so long as the distance between the attached roof bars is 65cm-75cm.

Is the VW Golf available on Motability?

Our hassle-free Motability scheme is designed to offer eligible applicants a brand-new car on a monthly Mobility allowance. Motability isn’t offered on used Volkswagen Golfs, but we’d be more than happy to talk to you about the new Golf, which is available through the scheme.
