Volkswagen’s junior hatch has long been popular with buyers of all ages, with the VW Polo providing a more compact and cost-effective solution than its sibling – the VW Golf.

The VW Polo is renowned for its high quality interior, premium tech and lightweight feel and is often regarded as one of the top superminis of its kind. Enjoy these features for a lesser price with a used VW Polo car.

Versions of the VW Polo

The fifth generation (2009-2018) and sixth generation (2018-present) of the Volkswagen Polo have both been praised for exceptional interiors and sharp driving dynamics – two characteristics long associated with the VW Golf range.

Trim levels

The VW Polo continues to be available in a range of trim levels, though only previous generations are available as both a three-door and a five-door.

The entry-level S specification on the previous VW Polo comes with everything you need to get from A to B, but it may be worth looking at one of the higher specifications for more premium features.

There are, in fact, nine trim levels on the Mk5 Volkswagen Polo – S, S A/C, Match edition, Beats, SEL, R-Line, BlueGT, and GTI. With all of this choice, it’s important to consider styling, sportiness, and kit when making a decision.

The VW Polo GTI sits at the top of the range and provides a thrilling drive as well as high levels of kit. If comfort and convenience are more important to you, then the VW Polo Beats is a prime choice – the quirky design highlights and upgraded sound system also make it a fun alternative. For the ultimate in luxury, opt for the VW Polo SEL, which features cruise control and a leather steering wheel and gear knob.

For ultra-efficiency, the VW Polo BlueMotion features an improved drivetrain, a variable geometry turbocharger engine and lighter components for reduced weight and resistance.

Our second-hand VW Polo cars also come in a range of different colours, with white, black, blue and grey being popular choices.

Engines, fuel types & gearboxes

In terms of available engines, the fifth generation Volkswagen Polo offers a 1.4-litre diesel or 1.0-litre petrol engine, or a 1.8-litre petrol if you opt for the GTI model.

If you’re looking at a sixth-generation VW Polo used car, then you’ll have the choice of a slightly larger 1.6-litre diesel, or the same 1.0-litre petrol engine.

Most VW Polo used cars will come with a manual gearbox, though if you’d prefer an automatic, then look out for cars with Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG.

VW Polo FAQs

VW Polo vs Golf – which should I buy?

The VW Polo and Golf are two of the best-selling cars in Britain, with the latter being the most expensive of the two.

One of the most distinctive differences is size – the VW Golf has a larger interior and boot space, making it an ideal choice for families. The boot size for a VW Golf ranges from 341-605 litres, whereas the VW Polo ranges from 305-351 litres. However, the VW Polo is still considerably spacious for a supermini.

From diesel to hybrid, the VW Golf does boast more engine options, but the VW Polo models can be equipped with a DSG automatic gearbox (excluding entry-level models).

Despite these comparisons, the VW Polo still offers exceptional quality and tech for the price, but in a smaller package.

Are Polos front-wheel drive?

The Volkswagen Polo is front-wheel drive, meaning it feels confident and sure-footed out on the road.

Front-wheel drive cars usually offer better fuel economy and traction in poor weather conditions, and the Polo is no different. You can expect great MPG from all models, as well as low emissions for a vehicle of its size.

What is the boot size?

The typical VW Polo boot size ranges between 305 litres and 351 litres, moving up to 1,079-1,125 litres with the rear seats lowered. The wheel arches of the VW Polo also don’t rise into the boot, allowing for additional space.

Is the VW Polo available on Motability?

Our hassle-free Motability scheme is designed to offer eligible applicants a brand-new car on a monthly Mobility allowance. Motability isn’t offered on used Volkswagen Polos, but we’d be more than happy to talk to you about the new VW Polo, which is available through the scheme.
