Electric vehicles are the future. With the ban on petrol and diesel cars set to come into place from 2035, why not make the switch to EV early? If you’re thinking about it, then it’s also a good idea to look into home charging options too. There are many benefits to owning an EV chargepoint, such as the added value it can make to your home, however like every purchase, there are also a few things to consider before investing in an EV chargepoint at your property.
If money is looking like a struggle, there are EV chargepoint grants available through the government to assist with getting a chargepoint installed at your home, if you fall into the eligible category.
In this blog, we’ll delve into the question of whether having an EV chargepoint installed at your home will increase its value.
Purchasing a vehicle is a significant life investment. However, when purchasing your first electric vehicle the price of installing an EV chargepoint can prove to be an extremely off-putting part of the process.
An EV chargepoint grant can help towards the cost of installing one at your home. If accepted for this grant you can receive either £350 or 75% off the cost to buy and install a socket, whichever is cheaper.
It is however important to note that applying for an EV chargepoint grant is different if you are applying as a landlord.
There are multiple factors to consider when applying for this grant with the main one being whether you are eligible to apply.
You can apply if you:
- You own and live in a flat, or rent a residential property
- Have adequate on-street parking as defined by your local planning and highways authority
- Have permission from your local planning and highways authority to install a cross-pavement charging solution between your home and the approved parking space
- Will install a cross-pavement charging solution before having your chargepoint installed
- Own an eligible vehicle
You cannot apply if you:
- Have already claimed a grant for your household under the Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant scheme or its predecessors - the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) or the Domestic Recharge Scheme
- Are moving house or planning on moving
- Have a current chargepoint and want a new one, even if a new car is not compatible with the current one
- Want to move an existing chargepoint to a new property
- Live in a house that you own (this is a significant change compared to the old grant)
Good news, if you qualify you can start your grant application process by contacting an OZEV-authorised installer to get a quote for your EV chargepoint. Following your quote, request your installer to start your claim, starting the process to getting your EV chargepoint installed.
Installing an EV charger at your home typically costs around £1000. However, if you are eligible for the UK government's EV chargepoint grant, the cost can be reduced to approximately £650. Here’s a breakdown of the EV chargepoint costs:
- Charger - around £600
- Charging cable (and safety cut-off device) - around £100
- Installation labour - around £300

Installing a home EV chargepoint is not just for convenience, it is also a strategic move ahead of time.
The UK has announced a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars starting in 2035. This ban aims to make a shift towards a cleaner environment making electric vehicles the new ‘normal’. Installing an EV chargepoint ahead of time ensures you’re ready for this change.
Ahead of the change, the UK government announced in June 2022 that all new homes and buildings are legally required to come equipped with EV chargepoints. Homes already equipped with an EV chargepoint are becoming extremely attractive to buyers as more people make that move. Selling a property with an EV chargepoint will be a significant selling point, potentially increasing your property’s value.
When you make the switch to an electric vehicle and having an EV chargepoint at your home you're supporting global and national efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
When charging your electric vehicle at home the costs typically average around 8p per mile depending on your selected energy tariff. This means a typical full charge for an EV with a 60 kWh battery costs around £17 giving you 200 miles of range. On average annually it costs £528 less to run an electric car compared to a petrol car.
EVs are significantly quieter than a standard vehicle. The reduction in engine noise means if a full street of houses were to have EV vehicles the overall noise levels would be significantly less. The reduction in noise leads to a more peaceful residential environment. Not forgetting, quieter streets can be a big factor as part of a property's valuation.
So, is a home EV charger worth it? Yes, installing an at-home electric vehicle charger is a smart decision for many reasons. Providing convenient charging at home saves time and reduces overall fuel costs. Environmentally, owning an EV charger is more attractive to buyers, potentially increasing property value. Furthermore, it prepares your home for the future ban coming into place from 2035. Despite the initial costs, the long-term advantages, convenience savings, environmental impact and property value make installing an EV charger a worthwhile decision for homeowners.
