Car Part Art Sculptures

Proving that even retired vehicles can find new life as mesmerizing works of art, join us in this blog as we showcase our favourite sculptures crafted from car parts.

Car Part Art Sculptures

Just because a car is no longer road-worthy doesn’t mean that the scrapheap is the only option left. The vehicles in this list have dodged the junkyard and found a new purpose - as part of a stunning car sculpture.

All over the world, artists are putting unwanted cars to creative use with their boundary-pushing pieces.

Here’s a rundown of some of our favourite car part art and sculptures, covering everything from a concrete pile-up to an exhaust pipe bush!

Carhenge

Jim Reinders

Just in case you haven’t guessed it from the name, this is a replica of Stonehenge formed entirely from vintage American cars that have been spray-painted silver. Located in Nebraska, USA, this amazing art installation was built in 1987 by Jim Reinders in memory of his father and has become a “quirky pop-culture icon”.

Turn von Klythie

John Chamberlain

This incredible two-storey-high installation by American-born artist John Chamberlain, is made from hundreds of crushed cars and is said to be inspired by ideas of eternity and transience.

Brought to life in 1995, the Turm von Klythie stands tall in the Quartier 205 mall in Berlin.

Transformer

Anchalee Saengtai

Thai artist Anchalee Saengtai and his family have built a number of Transformers car part sculptures using recycled components. This 20ft Optimus Prime is one of his finest creations. The character replicas project utilises the theme of eco-friendly art as Anchalee uses recycled car parts to create the pieces.

Dragon

Ptolemy Elrington

Brighton-based Elrington has fashioned everything from dogs to fish out of hubcaps found on the roadside, but this 10-metre-long dragon is surely his most spectacular piece of work. 200 hub caps were used to create this imposing sculpture and it took over a month to build.

Long Term Parking

Arman

Installed in the Château de Montcel park in France in 1982, this 60-foot-high car sculpture features 60 vehicles embedded into the concrete structure. Nouveau Realist artist, Arman, crafted it to symbolise the waste generated by mass production and draw attention to environmental issues associated with car production at the time.

Way of Roses

Severija Incirauskaite-Kriauneviciene

Lithuanian textile artist Severija Incirauskaite-Kriauneviciene punched small holes through several car panels and then covered them in intricate cross-stitching to create this artwork. Presented in 2009, Severija was said to be inspired by “proletarian concepts of beauty and utilitarian objects”

Cows

Miina Äkkijyrkkä

This massive creation from Helsinki-based sculptor Miina Äkkijyrkkä was based on the herd of cows she cared for at the time. The towering sculpture is one of many, which are all made from various parts of used cars. Just like the creatures that inspired them, they’ve set up residence in a scenic field.

Hedgerow

Lucy Slivinski

Artist Lucy Slivinski created this hedgerow-like tangle of car exhaust pipes and tail lights, exhibited in Grant Park, Chicago, as part of the 2006 ‘Chicago Car Culture’ event.

Cadillac Ranch

Ant Farm

This famed public art installation was created by the art group Ant Farm, back in 1974. Visitors to the site – which sits just outside the town of Amarillo, Texas – love making their own additions to the already heavily graffitied Cadillacs, which are set in the sand at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza.
