Electric cars: what you need to know

Are you considering your first electric car or van and wondering whether now's the right time to make the switch? Or maybe you already own an electric vehicle and you're ready for something new? Either way, you probably have questions about the practicality of electric vehicles today, how the costs stack up, and whether you'll be able to find a model you like.

Why should you buy electric?

Simply put, electric vehicles are cheaper to run, they're cleaner and quieter, and the charging infrastructure is better than you might think. Plus, range anxiety is now a thing of the past with some EV cars delivering over 300 miles fully charged, meaning those longer journeys can be completely worry free.

Our brand partners are continuously developing their electric vehicles, so there’s more choice than ever. From compact city cars to spacious electric SUV’s, there’s now an electric vehicle to suit every lifestyle.

For the information and tools you need to decide whether electric's right for you, look no further.

Which electric vehicle should I buy?

Whether you’re looking for an electric car for your family or an electric van for your business, we’re here to help you decide which one is right for you.  There are different types of electric vehicles available to suit everyone’s needs.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) run entirely from their battery and are known for their zero emissions and smooth, quiet rides. The mileage range varies depending on the model but there are options for everyone with the range on electric vehicles constantly improving.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are good for those who want the best of both worlds combining a traditional gasoline engine and an electric motor, providing flexibility to suit your lifestyle.

Self-Charging Hybrids (HEVs) like PHEVs, use both a gasoline engine and an electric motor but do not require external charging. They rely on regenerative braking and the engine to recharge the battery. Great for those who want to reduce their emissions compared to conventional vehicles.

Choosing the right type of electric vehicle depends on lifestyle and driving habits. Discover more about the different types of electric vehicles in our helpful blog

Frequently asked questions about owning an electric vehicle

Probably one of the first electric car questions that comes to any potential owner’s mind is whether the car is going to work for you.

The answer is most likely to be a yes! Electric vehicles have come a long way in recent years. Now available as sleek city cars, performance-based sport cars, reliable crossovers, and SUVs - there is a much-varied choice to hopefully suit your requirements.

There are three types of electric vehicles available, including battery electric (BEV), hybrid electric (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles. All-electric vehicles use only electricity to power the motor, while hybrid electric vehicles have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles can run on electricity or gasoline, depending on the driving conditions.

The UK’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure is continually growing to meet the needs of EV drivers. At the end of May 2024, there were 62,536 electric vehicle charging points across the UK at 32,992 charging locations. This represents a year-on-year increase of 43%.

Charging time for an EV varies depending on the battery capacity and the charging method. Typically, it takes around 30 minutes to an hour to charge an EV to 80% capacity using a public fast charger. A full charge using a regular household outlet can take several hours, which people tend leave on overnight. Ask our sales teams for more information on the vehicle model you are interested in.

The range of an electric vehicle depends on the battery size and the driving conditions. Generally, modern EVs have a range of 100-300 miles on a single charge, but this can vary depending on factors such as temperature, driving speed, and terrain. Ask our sales teams for more information on the vehicle model you are interested in or check out our guide on how to increase your electric car range.

EVs generally require less maintenance than gasoline-powered cars, as they have fewer moving parts and do not require oil changes or other routine maintenance. However, the battery pack may need to be replaced eventually after approximately 8-10 years and pricing will depend on the model.

Of course! The EV switchover in 2035 will mean only electric vehicles will be manufactured, so now is as good a time as any to make the change and begin your electric journey.
